Completed in 2010, this residence in São Paulo, Brazil, by Mauricio Arruda Arquitetos & Designers updated a home theater, dining room, pantry, living room, and terrace. A wide variety of both pattern and color here balances ultra-modern design with the taste of a family that enjoys being home for work, study, and leisure. The winning combination here is the meld of contemporary styling with the easygoing attitude of the occupants, readily apparent in some interesting décor: amid contemporary furnishings (a coffee table with scissor-like legs) and art (black-and-white asymmetric print) in the living room, you find a “moonscape” picture with more than a touch of humor. The same can be seen in the dining room: look at the statuary and you’ll see a whole menagerie of stylized animals!
This dining area also boasts a large screen with a photographic forest print, a touch that brings “outdoors” up close and personal. Further “green” presence comes from a clutch of house plants providing both graceful curved lines and soothing natural touches. Steps away from the dining area is the entertainment center, with a cozy couch and colorful print pillows. Within easy reach are record albums and other media, flat-screen TV, stereo system…and some framed youthful-looking art. Color makes an appearance in the bathroom, in a gold cube-patterned wallpaper that echoes the tones of wood cabinetry; purple-printed pillows and nighttime photographic art grace the master bedroom. The mix is clean, uncluttered, but also at times tongue-in-cheek — the perfect proportion of casual and sophisticated for a modern family.
