House designs come from different sources; this house sprang from a party conversation that led to a client hiring Rolf Ockert Design on one of its “maiden voyages” as an independent entity, and personal rapport between architect and client went a long way toward its success in these truly stunning results. Fun-loving themselves, the clients wanted a house that would provide lots of light, air circulation, and killer views. This led to this design, centered around an internal courtyard that, as the architect puts it, “pretty much bares its soul straight away…the amazing view is visible from the moment one walks in and stays in view from wherever you are in the house.” A series of staircases, some of stone and one “floating” in beautiful wood grain, allow effortless access between levels, a must for this lively family.
The lower floor is dedicated to the kids, with three large bedrooms and a play area that segues right into the lower garden and pool. The parents’ master suite is upstairs, but the main level is the hub of the home, with living room/kitchen/dining space and expansive glass windows. Needing to adapt to both local height restrictions and a fairly small lot, the design incorporates custom-made curved exterior wood veneer panels that had to be constructed and finished from scratch, as no existing product would fill the bill. Echoing the graceful curves on the outside, a unique wavy interior wood wall both softens the lines of strict rectangular style and adds a touch of whimsy. Such attention to detail by Rolf Ockert has paid off…in happy clients, who readily admit they got “all they wanted and more.”
