“I’m fixated with the idea of women of strength,” Miuccia Prada said after the show. “There is a necessity to be strong, visible, fighters, and this is an encouragement to be out there and to do something. It’s absurd, against the rules; it’s a happy collection,” she continued. “You need to be fighting. It’s about a debate about women; it’s a political discourse: ‘I’m allowed to do whatever I want to do with clothes.’ If they see you, they listen.” Miuccia Prada chose a bold, matter-of-fact approach to her Spring 2014 RTW collection. More power to women and more power to wearing whatever you want to; Prada violated more than a few “fashion rules” in an “in your face” manner with undergarments appearing on the outside of clothing in almost female superhero style.
Admittedly, a bizarre collection by Prada’s own words, the collection is bright and artsy, with an ugly sweater party-like vibe which was fun to watch walking up and down the runway. It certainly takes a brave soul to don one of these outfits that boasts creative colorblocking, keyhole cuts, chunky embroidery and, of course, the wicked external bras and headdresses. The modified soccer socks pulled up to the knees like leg warmers give a great reason for a second double take, just to make sure you saw what you think you did. The footwear is no exception to this flamboyant collection of fashion oddities that you cannot help noticing. Miuccia Prada took a huge risk with this fierce collection of marked individuality. Without question women everywhere will find a way to incorporate bits and pieces of it into their everyday wear.
