Natural Landscape at Its Elegant Finest: River’s Edge by Surrounds Landscaping

Rivers Edge Surrounds Landscape Architecture 01

Perched literally on the sloping bank of a river, this spacious home is now graced with a welcoming garden and outdoor living area, thanks to Surrounds Landscape Architecture. Enter through the wide stone driveway and enjoy it as just the beginning of a lovely long, winding road that branches off in several directions to let guests amble through the various outdoor “rooms.” The home itself appears to emerge from the woods, backed with a magnificent stand of mature trees that provide shade, privacy, and a stately backdrop against the clear blue sky. Carefully sculpted curving beds follow the line of driveway and walkway, their shade alight with tall spiky plantings. Where is your eye drawn first? Perhaps to the clever central mini-garden in the drive, with a graceful tree bluish ground cover, and golden tufted grass.

Across broad concrete stepping stones, you’ll find a two-level seating area, part of it terraced slightly higher for more expansive views of the river and woodland beyond; either place, however, is a treat for the eyes. Echoing the forest and riverbed, chairs are garden furniture, wicker with thick green cushions, complemented by small wrought-iron tables. Variegated grass surrounds this seating area, just within the retaining wall, and lighted warmly for nighttime magic. The significant décor here is from nature itself, with stone steps, flagstone paths, and even two immense boulders as “seats” along one bend in the path. There’s literally no need for frills of any other kind, with the sumptuous green that wraps you in delicious cool color and serenity. That, of course, is the aim of Surrounds — bringing nature up close to its clients.
