Contemporary Remick Yard by Huettl Landscape Architecture

Steep Site No Problem Remick Yard by Huettl Landscape Architecture 01

Hard to believe this sleek contemporary is a pre-fab house — it’s simply fabulous in this family-friendly landscape by Huettl Landscape Architecture. In collaboration with architect Joseph Remick, it includes a vineyard, an in-ground trampoline, an oval spa deck, and a long rectangular water feature. The outdoor “rooms” are clearly separated, yet easily reachable from one to another across green lawns framed nicely with terraced plantings; an alfresco dining area sits well-shaded by those beds, softening the steep grade of the site. The spa is up one those slopes, but the angle is reduced by shallow steps and its smooth shape — with an added bonus of a clear sight line to the children’s play area, so parents can relax and provide supervision at the same time.

High stone retaining walls separate the lawn from the grade above, and native grass plantings soften the rectangular lines of house and steps; tall willowy grasses wave near a shallow stone-lined pond featuring its very own lily pads. There’s plenty of room on the deck for a child’s tipi, plus a grill and cooking area adjacent to the house with another seating area. High wood fencing, its slats spaced just a touch, gives a welcome degree of privacy to the back yard from the front driveway and garages, without being either imposing or too stark, and in a warm shade that harmonizes well with the exterior cladding on the home. This collaboration of architect and landscape artist has created an inviting space with plenty of room for all ages.
